Unique HCAA Juried Artist Members’ Exhibit

Some may say artistic people are a little “different,” and this exhibit will give Juried Artist members the opportunity to display their Unique styles. Perhaps they see the world as abstract, perhaps they see the world as opposite to their personal vision, perhaps they just are a little off-center. Whatever the Juried Artist members display in this exhibit, the work will be FUN. This one-of-a-kind art exhibit continues through July 21.

Page & Stage Theatre Co.’s Summer Drama Camp

Page & Stage, northern Indy’s newest theatre company, is hosting a drama-for-literacy camp in the summer of 2018! The camp is for ages 4-18 and all levels of experience. It is directed by Dr. Paul “Spike” Wilson, former director of the Kokomo Summer Drama Camp, one of the largest and most successful theatre camps in the eastern US. Page & Stage Co. is a theatre dedicated to education, outreach, literacy, and community. There is a 15 camper limit per session. Spaces tend to fill up quickly!

Noblesville Visitor’s Center HCAA Featured Juried Artist Members Revolving Exhibit: Kevin Hughey

HCAA is sponsoring monthly exhibits of selected member’s work to be on display at the Noblesville Visitors Center. Kevin Hughey is the featured artist for July.
“I’ve always made things. I’ve always thought it was important to make things. It’s one of the ways I enter into and participate in the world. Relationships are forged, moments are experienced, art is made.
Photography, the dark room in particular, was my first date with my sweetheart. Our second was at a gig…I’m also a drummer and percussionist and have built drums with fellow musicians in the backyard. I’ve done woodworking with my Dad, thrown pottery in the greenhouse, built sculptures with classmates, made masks with students, learned to bake bread from a weaver. Make things.
I’ve had the good fortune to see some great art around the world, especially paintings. Inspired by art history and encouraged by friends and family, I went back to painting a few years ago.
I’m currently a decorative painter, flower blooms in particular. So many varieties, shapes and colors. I wanted to study flowers and hone my chops, then, create a Series. I think in a Series, the blooms provide a special impact in a room, whether a personal space like one’s living room or a public lobby or office space. It was also fun to create a series of flower blooms in wood.
Then I moved on to groups of flowers, a more complex task, and am pivoting towards abstracts, my next step. I was honored to win the SALI XII National Abstract GPAC Choice Award and hope to carry forward with this endeavor.
Though I may have a bit of angst while creating, my work is always intended to offer a bit of joy, an interesting shape, or a friendly pop of color to the viewer.
I earned a B. S. in Art Education at Ball State University. I used my teaching skills, when living in Hawaii, at Nanaikapono Elementary where I taught art to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in the only classroom on the beach! I’ve continued to study art at Herron School of Art, The Art Center, and with fellow artists where we can share tips, techniques, and critiques.

White River Wind Symphony Presents Third Annual Sounds of America Concert

$12 ($10 until June 20)
Legacy Bible Church is located at 2140 Greenfield Ave. in Noblesville.
White River Wind Symphony is a professional concert band open only by audition or invitation. As such the band plays at a very high quality level, and the Sounds of America Concert has become a favorite Fishers Music Works event in central Indiana in just three years. The concert always consists of all American music in a variety of styles. This year features music from film, Broadway, Madison Avenue, and the Olympics, plus music of Elvis, marches, a hymn, and of course music to honor America and celebrate our country’s 242nd birthday. Educational and sometimes humorous narration helps the audience to understand more deeply what they are hearing; this year’s narrator, Ashton Wolf, will help with many answers to the question, “Why do people compose music?”
A special tribute to veterans of World War II, entitled The Greatest Generation, is included in this year’s concert. Another patriotic selection, An American Spectacular, takes the audience on a musical history tour of our nation from the French and Indiana War to the present. All active and veteran military personnel will also be honored through the songs associated with their branch of the service.
Featured soloist for the concert is Mindy Root, a veteran of New York City opera and a regular with Fishers Music Works. Mindy will perform the extended version of The Star Spangled Banner.
Donations will be collected at the concert to benefit Ella Whistler, the 13-year-old student who was critically injured when a gunman opened fire in her classroom at Noblesville West Middle School on May 25, 2018. All donations will be submitted to Ella’s Go Fund Me campaign to assist with her medical expenses and bills. These proceeds are directed to the family to help offset the expenses during Ella’s road to recovery.

Fishers Arts Crawl

Arts Crawl is a self-guided tour through the Nickel Plate District businesses of Fishers presented by the City of Fishers and Fishers Arts Council. Anna p.s. is an Indie folk musician who conveys a sense of weariness throughout her simple but resonant songs, but it’s a weariness that keeps a blanket of hope tucked up under its chin, even as the rain keeps falling outside the windows. Grace always lurks around the corner on tunes that layer delicate vulnerability over the hearty stock of this songwriter’s spirit. With technical acumen acquired during an early career as an audio engineer and a humble but confident stage presence groomed as a founding member of indie roots rock band Shiny Shiny Black, Anna stepped out as a solo musician in 2014. She’s been on the road intermittently ever since, and her debut LP Umbrella released in July 2016, showcasing her signature sonic blend of melancholy, hope, and resilience.

James Weston and Emily Ann Thompson in concert

James Weston will be performing his original songs on acoustic guitar and piano with Emily Ann Thompson sitting in on violin. James has worked professionally as a singer-songwriter, session musician, recording engineer, music producer and film composer for over twenty years. As a Singer-Songwriter, he has worked alongside highly successful artists like Keith Carradine (Oscar winner) and David Campbell (Grammy winner). He has personally released a dozen records and has toured extensively in the US and Europe. His sound and writing has been compared to Tom Waits, Joe Cocker, and Bob Dylan, utilizing his rich baritone voice to command attention to his meaningful words and melodies. James is a blue-collar musician that prefers an intimate audience, singing directly to people and enjoying music on a personal level. He is truly a throwback and one of the last real troubadours. It’s been quite a few years since James has played a concert in the Indianapolis area, so come on out for a special Sunday concert event! James’ sister, local favorite Emily Ann Thompson will be accompanying him on violin.
