Read on for call-outs and more, and be sure to read all the way through – we wouldn’t want you to miss an important deadline! Note: opportunities are listed with a deadline in bold (when applicable).
Indiana Arts Commission accepting 2019 On-Ramp program applications
The Indiana Arts Commission announced today the opening of applications for the 2019 On-Ramp accelerator program for early career creative entrepreneurs.
On-Ramp provides artists with ways to enhance their business skills including professional coaching for development of business plans or career goals, new connections with potential Indiana supporters, partners or collaborators, and access to special funds to take them to the next level in career development.
“We received more than 100 applications for the inaugural On-Ramp program, and 36 Hoosier artists and creative entrepreneurs were selected to participate in a three-day creative entrepreneur course designed to strengthen their business skills,” said Artist and Community Services Manager Anna Tragesser. “We were thrilled by the response to the program. We know Hoosier artists are serious about building successful careers and we are committed to helping them succeed.”
The 2019 On-Ramp program will offer a three-day On-Ramp Creative Entrepreneur Course May 9 – 12, 2019 in Nashville, Indiana and will focus on strengthening business skills, career goals, and community engagement learning. Those who complete the course are also eligible for the On-Ramp fellowship, which includes up to $2,000 in project funding.
Application for On-Ramp must be completed through the Arts Commission’s online application system. Deadline for application is 4:30 p.m. (EST) January 17, 2019.

City of Fishers announces a new partnership to build a one-of-a-kind makerspace
Hub and Spoke founder David Decker, president of OnPoint Real Estate Solutions Travis Tucker, and Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness announced the City’s latest partnership to foster entrepreneurship and early workforce development. Partners Decker and Tucker plan to invest $14 million to build Hub and Spoke Design Center, an 85,000-square foot building with showroom, office, and warehouse space situated on 106th Street along the City’s proposed Nickel Plate Trail. The Hub and Spoke will be a center of activity for the home building and design industry alongside a one-of-a-kind Makerspace for hobbyists, entrepreneurs, and students to design and create.
“Our goal is to show people the possibilities of success and growth in our industry through project and work-based learning. There is something magical that happens when you take an idea in your head and build it with your hands,” remarked David Decker.
The mission for the Hub and Spoke Design Center is to foster a forward-looking environment that supports purpose, innovation, and collaboration. The Design Center’s office space connects home building and design tenants to clients and makers all in one building. Initial tenants include Battersby Danielson Azbell and Associates, Franklin Window & Door, A\Co, and OnPoint Real Estate Solutions.
“David and Travis’ entrepreneurial stories are inspiring,” said Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. “Hub and Spoke deepens Fishers’ commitment to entrepreneurs of all industries. We’re on a mission to connect residents to their passions, and David and Travis’ leadership in our community will help us bring that mission closer to fruition.”
The Hub and Spoke Design Center will be a unique destination where visitors can experience:
- Retail showrooms, office space, and warehousing
- Makerspace and Training Facility– this dedicated space will feature tools, manufacturing equipment, and art studio space where youth, adults, and entrepreneurs are empowered to create, discover, and innovate their passions alongside training and educational assistance.
- Community Connect – an interactive indoor-outdoor cooperative and agile work space for collaborative work to support industry connection and growth for entrepreneurs, innovators, students and community members.
- Event Space – leveraging proximity to the proposed Nickel Plate Trail, the event space will be a destination for entertainment and recreation at the unique indoor/outdoor space.
David Decker and Travis Tucker intend to leverage Hub and Spoke’s Makerspace and Community Connect area to grow awareness around career paths in the skilled trade industry. Well-documented labor shortages in the trade industry have contributed to students’ lack of exposure to trade experiences as part of their primary and secondary education. Hub and Spoke intends to eliminate barriers to those experiences and provide students a place to explore trades as a career. Hub and Spoke will also work alongside college institutions to support students seeking related degree-required careers such as construction management, architectural design, engineering, etc.
The Hub and Spoke Design Center is anticipated to break ground March 2019 with completion Fall 2019.
The City of Fishers will present this project to the City Council for vote on the City’s recommendations to support the project with a 10-year traditional real property tax abatement, waiver of impact fees, and 10-year lease of office space and makerspace for training and educational purposes. The Council is expected to vote on the project at the November City Council meeting.

Apply to be Ignite Studio’s next Maker in Residence
Ignite Studio invites central Indiana artists to serve as our Maker-in-Residence for a 12-week period. Ignite Studio is an arts-focused makerspace designed to offer broad access to the Hamilton County community to a variety of art and making practices. Our goal is to help patrons on-ramp to their own creativity by introducing new and exciting equipment and experiences. The Maker-in-Residence program is an integral part of this mission to help inspire and empower people to reconnect to making practices. Selected residents will receive a $2500 stipend and a modest budget for supplies.

New Zine Seeks Contributors
A group of local creatives has joined forces to publish a new all-inclusive, light-hearted zine about Fishers and surrounding areas. “The Locale,” created by a skeleton crew of local folks who take pride in their community, will connect residents of the Nickel Plate Region with their local arts scene. Short for ‘magazine,’ zines are a product of the “do-it-yourself” culture that allows both individuals and groups to self-publish content on a variety of topics and in a variety of formats, usually in small circulation. “The Locale” seeks writers, photographers, and illustrators to contribute a wide variety of family-friendly zine content that explores the many facets of our local creative scene. From one member of the organizing group:
“There’s a lot of talk about local-ness, and it can come across as fake. To me, being local just means liking the place where you are. Our aim is to give everyone the ‘heads up’ on the cool art things going on around town, have some laughs, and give everyone something to talk about besides the weather.”
Want to contribute your work? Submissions should be family-friendly, and related to the Nickel Plate community. Formats can include (but are not limited to) stories on local events or art shows, profiles on local artists, comics, columns of any kind, and original art. All Indiana artists are welcome to submit work for consideration, but preference will be given to those residing in the Nickel Plate Region (Fishers, Noblesville, Cicero, Arcadia, and Atlanta).
