Indiana birds inspire the art of Matt Rees. He applies techniques from the glory years of natural history illustration in the mid-1700s and centuries-old Japanese printmakers to create modern woodblock prints that accurately depict our feathered friends in their natural habitat, particularly those that flock to Putnam County, which boasts the most protected land in Indiana.

His striking, detailed pieces evolve from a complex process that he says demands drafting/drawing skills, woodworking skills, manic attentiveness during the printing process, and a healthy dose of luck.

Matt will provide the tools and materials for you to try a piece of his process during 2nd SaturDate, 1-5 p.m. Nov. 8 at Indiana Artisan Gifts & Gallery, 22 N. Rangeline Road in the Carmel Arts & Design District. You’ll carve a simple design in Styrofoam and then print it to take home. A Carmel Arts grant funds this event.
