In 2019, I received a Teacher Creativity Grant from Eli Lilly. After a 3-year pandemic delay, I was finally able to travel abroad during the summer of 2023. The Inspiration of Fiber is an immersive study of textiles that took place over the course of five weeks in Italy.

I traveled from northern Italy to the south to attend various fiber workshops while absorbing Italian culture. I spent a day at a milliner’s studio to create a handmade raffia hat. I designed and assembled a pair of leather sandals at a family-owned factory. I also learned to dye leather with wine and designed a handbag while staying at the home of a leather artist.

In the Apennines mountains, I stayed at a farm and felted wool from the local sheep. All of these experiences renewed my desire to work with textiles and have deeply enriched the curriculum upon my return.

Please enjoy the weaving, dying fabric, slow stitching, fiber collages, batik, wet felting and needle felting creations my students engaged in this year. It has been a joy to share my experiences with the students and watch them embrace these new mediums.

Thank you for supporting the arts at Noble Crossing Elementary.
Ciao,
