 August is Abuzz at Noblesville Creates

Make the end of summer the beginning of something creative.

NOBLESVILLE, IND. — This August, unplug and create with Noblesville Creates in hipstoric Downtown Noblesville. See an exhibit, sign up for a class, buy art, enjoy live music and become a card-carrying member. And it’s not too late to sign up for Performing Arts Camp, where kids will learn to tell a lie in preparation for the Aug. 5 eighth annual Liar’s Contest at the Indiana State Fair.

Exhibit: Nostalgia, Aug. 5-27, Free

Following a series of introspective exhibits, Noblesville Creates will lighten the mood in August with its Nostalgia exhibit. Take a trip back in time through images of idyllic days gone by and simpler times. Art in a variety of mediums by a range of artists will be featured. The exhibit is part of Noblesville Creates’ year-long Bicentennial focus and is open to the public in the Judge Stone House Gallery during regular business hours (Wednesday-Friday, noon-5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.), July 1-30; free admission. Most works will be for sale to the public.

August First Friday, Aug. 5, 6-9 p.m., Free

Take a stroll back in time during our August First Friday, the opening reception for Nostalgia, featuring local artwork that depicts scenes from the past. Mingle with local artists and grab a sneak peek of artwork from artists participating in Art Fair on the Square. Visit our artist studios, participate in a hands-on activity inspired by the exhibit and enjoy beer, wine (available for sale) and snacks. Timeless live music of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s from local musician Andy Schomburg will round out the night and leave you in a good mood for the rest of the evening. Registration is not required. Just come on out and enjoy!

NPArts Artist Showcase: James Anderson, Aug. 1-31, Free

Photographer Jim Anderson will exhibit photographs of nature and wildlife in the Stephenson House on the Noblesville Creates campus through Aug. 31. Anderson calls his photography business “Art from the Spirit” because he believes God guides his lens. Stop by Anderson’s exhibit to view his unique wildlife photos and check out his website at artfromthespiritphoto.com. The exhibit is open to the public in the during regular business hours (Wednesday-Friday, noon-5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.); free admission.

Acrylic Painting 101: Wednesdays, Aug. 31-Oct. 5

Noblesville Creates Studio Artist Lesley Haflich guides participants through the basics of acrylic painting, including usage of tools, composition, color theory and more during this six-week class, meeting weekly on Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m, inside the Judge Stone House on the NPArts campus.

Students ages 15 and older are invited to explore a variety of subject matter including landscape and still life painting. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about art history and explore a variety of artists. This class is perfect for beginners or intermediate-level artists who seek additional guidance, helpful tips and friendly feedback in a laidback atmosphere. Noblesville Creates provides all materials, but participants may also bring their own supplies.

Cost is $175 for the six classes, which includes all supplies. Noblesville Creates members receive 10 percent discount off class price (members must call to receive discount: 317-452-3690). To register, visit “Classes” at noblesvillecreates.org.

Comic Art Creatives: Tuesdays, Aug. 30-Oct. 4, 5-6:30 p.m.

Who are the illustrators behind your favorite comic books? You are! During Comic Art Creatives, students ages 8-12 will explore drawing, animation, and illustration techniques in different mediums and styles to hone skills and uncover their signature style. They will learn how to create a storyboard, learn the basics of layout, developing characters, and finish with a completed comic all their own.

Classes will be held at the Recreation Annex at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana (300 N. 17th St., Noblesville). Price is $95/student for Noblesville residents; $109/student for non-residents. To register visit “Classes” at noblesvillecreates.org or call Noblesville Parks at 317-770-5750.
