This Month at Noblesville Creates: Art fair savvy, Frederick Douglass, First Friday, 200 Years of Transportation and Deitch exhibit
NOBLESVILLE, IND. —Noblesville Creates keeps the arts on track in May with exhibits, classes and more — most of which are free. Unplug and create with Noblesville Creates in hipstoric Downtown Noblesville!
May Artist Showcase: Shawn Deitch, May 3-31, FREE
Shawn Deitch will showcase her oil paintings in Noblesville Creates’ Stephenson House May 3-31. Deitch was recently honored as a 2016 Hoosier Woman Artist. Her painting “Morning Glory,” will hang in the Indiana State House for one year. Deitch is a juried member of the Hamilton County Artists’ Association, the Hoosier Salon, the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association and the American Impressionist Society. May First Friday, May 6, 6-9 p.m., FREE
Drive, walk or take a horse-drawn carriage — we don’t care how you get here as long as you don’t miss this exciting First Friday opening reception for 200 Years of Indiana Transportation. Live music will be provided by Emily Crapnell (vocalist from End Notes) and guitarist Steve Newby. Meet May Showcase Artist Shawn Deitch next door at her reception in the Stephenson House.
Hands-on activities, live music, food and drink (wine/beer available for purchase) offer you a chance to unwind on a Friday night. Registration is not required. Just come on out and enjoy!
Exhibit: 200 Years of Indiana Transportation, May 6-28, FREE
As the Crossroads of America, Indiana has had a staunch reliance on and affinity for transportation throughout the years, as dirt horse trails evolved into highways, and a humble car race became the Indianapolis 500.
During the 200 Years of Indiana Transportation exhibit at Noblesville Creates, we will celebrate planes, trains, automobiles and all of the other ways we have traveled across Indiana history. Expect to see photographs, paintings, books and more.
The exhibit is open to the public for free May 6-28 during regular business hours (Wednesday-Friday, noon-5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.). [A JPEG of Mike McKinley’s “Two Engines” is available upon request.]
SMART Series: World Premiere Read-Through of Douglass Play, May 12, 6:30-8 p.m.
The first time Frederick Douglass came to Indiana, he was beaten by an unruly mob. The second time, he was welcomed with open arms. Join us during our upcoming SMART Series event on May 12, 6:30-8 p.m., for the world premiere read-through of a play about Douglass and Roberts Settlement — and provide your feedback to keep the project moving forward. Noshes and drinks provided.
Sponsored by Roberts Settlement and Visit Hamilton County, this new theatrical project explores how Douglass’ story connects to Hamilton County as part of the Indiana Bicentennial. Every Member of Noblesville Creates gets in for free and can bring one guest for free! For everyone else, the cost is $10.
Art of Business Class: Gearing up for Art Fair Season, May 18, 6-8:30 p.m.
This interactive panel discussion is designed to help artists of all experience levels gear up for a summer and fall full of art fairs and other sales event. We are assembling a crack team of art fair experts to share their tips, tricks, and horror stories. Register online from noblesvillecreates.org/classes/art-of-business.
The Art of Business sessions are coordinated by Noblesville Creates with the help of the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce, Hamilton East Public Library and the Fishers Arts Council. Cost is $5 admission; Level 2 Artist Members admitted free. Register at noblesvillecreates.org.
