Noblesville Visitor’s Center Art Exhibit: Jim Oliver
December 1- January 24 , Fri.-Sat. 12-5 p.m.
Noblesville Visitor’s Center
FREE!
Jim Oliver has been a wood craftsman most of his life. He operated a small business in the early nineties making Amish style furniture, culminating in being juried into the 1996 Country Folk Arts Show at the Indiana State Fair grounds. Simultaneously, he pursued his interest in fine arts, taking drawing classes and
self teaching through library books and watching tv personality/artist Bob Ross. Painting with acrylics and oils, and drawing, became a hobby in his spare time outside of his job in the circulation department of a local library. Not long after Jim married his co-worker and fellow artist Kristina, he and his wife took a road trip to the Rockies, after which both were inspired to leave the library to pursue a creative life full-time. Jim has combined his love of wood and his drawing techniques to create art through pyrography. Also known as wood-burning, pyrography employs a pencil like tool with a heated metal tip to burn designs. Influenced by his trip out west, Jim’s current focus is on creating wildlife scenes. He was recently juried into the Hamilton County Artist’s Association and has had many of his pieces on exhibit in various local galleries.

February 2-18, Fri. & Sat. at 8 p.m. and Sun. at 2 p.m.
The Belfry Theatre, Noblesville
$15 adults, $12 children 12 and under
Directed by Jen Otterman. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a dramatic comedy by Neil Simon about hope, friendship and the eternal desire to control one’s own destiny. The play examines a charismatic rogue who manipulates the system so he can serve his short sentence in an airy mental institution rather than prison. He learns quickly that this move is a mistake when he meets his match in the head nurse whose tyrannical grip on her patients had been unshakable until McMurphy. He swiftly takes control of the ward accomplishing what the medical personnel have been unable to do for twelve years; coaxing a presumed deaf and dumb Native American to speak and leading the others from submission into independence. For this “infraction”, Head Nurse Ratched punishes McMurphy with electric shock treatments. The duel between the two finally culminates when he arranges a rollicking midnight party, complete with girls and liquor. Lest she lose complete control over her ward, Ratched forces him to undergo a frontal lobotomy. But, an unexpected friend helps McMurphy have the final word.
Presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.

The Polk Street Review is an annual anthology that celebrates Noblesville with three categories: images, song lyrics/poetry, and prose. There is one simple rule for submissions: they must be either submitted by people with a connection to Noblesville or the submission content must be connected to Noblesville.
The book was founded by two Noblesville authors, Kurt A. Meyer and Bill Kenley, who continue to be involved as consultants, authors, and fundraisers; LSS took over publication in 2017. The popular book launch in February is one of LSS’s annual Signature Events, and we look forward to the 2018 The Polk Street Review book launch celebration on February 24, 2018, where Ribbon Prizes will be awarded for: Merit Award (Best in Book), 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place and (2) Honorable Mentions in each category.
