The brainchild of author Sarah E. Morin and artist/author Alys Caviness-Gober, NICE is now in its 5th year. The annual project includes workshops and a one-night event in the Fall. NICE offers the opportunity to discuss and be (re)inspired by classic literary passages selected by Alys and Sarah E. each year. NICE breathes new life into the classics by encouraging people, high-school age and up, to discuss the works selected, and encourages critical thinking and experimenting with creativity. This year, our theme is Folklore and Fairy Tales ~ Beyond the Fairy Dust, and our passages come from four folklore and fairy tales: The Story of Hunahpú and Xbalanqué (in Popul Vuh, trans. Ximénez, c. 1700), The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Anderson, 1836), The Ballad of Tam Lin (Celtic, c. 1549 in The Complaynt of Scotland; our NICE passage is Child Ballad 39A from The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, 1882-1898 by Francis James Child), and Hansel and Gretel (The Brothers Grimm, collected and recorded 1812). We’re looking at the original stories through a modern lens, to relate them to today’s world with fresh insights.

Each workshop offers a different discussion focus, but both workshops include discussing the stories and passages in terms of imagery, symbolism, and cultural context. We connect to them in fresh new ways, relevant to personal experiences. Workshops focus on the original themes, which are usually somewhat darker than what we find in translations/retellings and films in popular culture over time. Workshops also have time for people to create new art, in all mediums and genres, inspired our story selections. At the NICE event on October 5, participants are given four minutes to share their creative interpretations with our audience.
Workshops Fees:  $25 per person per workshop. Discussion and art creativity time. All mediums & genres welcome (writing, 2D art, 3D art, music/songwriting, etc). Bring your own artistic tools (paper, laptops, paints, etc) or use what we provide: this year, we’ll guide the creation of abstract art and provide 6×6 canvases and acrylic paints. Space is limited at our workshops, so we encourage early registration. We also encourage payment via our secure Square Market: http://squareup.com/store/LSS/item/nice-workshops
