04 Feb Meyer Najem Showcase: “Multiple Narratives” by Jerry Mannell
Fans of Jerry Mannell’s work will immediately recognize his distinctive approach to painting—one that blends abstract composition, suggestive form, and bold color into visually engaging and thought-provoking pieces.
“I start with a small sketch, concentrating on composition without a theme in mind,” Mannell explains of his creative process. “That drawing will reveal an idea or direction that, once transferred to canvas, develops in kind.” This intuitive approach is at the heart of “Multiple Narratives”.
The upcoming showcase exhibit explores the idea that meaning in art is not fixed, but fluid, shaped by the viewer’s own experiences and perceptions. As the title suggests, “Multiple Narratives” invites varied interpretations, with each painting offering space for personal engagement. Jerry’s use of shape and color is suggestive rather than literal, retaining an abstract character while hinting at recognizable forms and subjects.
With a background that includes a fine arts degree from Ball State University and a career as a senior art director and freelance graphic designer, Mannell brings a strong sense of composition and visual balance to his work. Over time, he has leaned more into allowing themes to emerge organically during the painting process, relying less on preconceived ideas and more on discovery.
“I try to merge modeled shapes with abstract composition and open use of color, suggesting rather than representing,” Jerry says. “That synthesis of representation and abstraction is shorthand for what I attempt in a painting.”
“Multiple Narratives” will be on display from January 23-February 27, 2026 at the Meyer Najem Second Floor Gallery. The Meyer Najem building in downtown Fishers is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Meet Jerry during his free public reception, part of the Second Friday Gallery Hop, on Friday, February 13th, from 6-8 p.m.!
