07 Jul Meyer Najem Showcase: Floral Celebration by John Dierdorf
John Dierdorf, a past member of the Noblesville Creates board, has a passion for artwork that creates expression for architectural elements, trees, and flowers. Abstract impressionism is Dierdorf’s preferred style and definition of his work, and the use of “loose, spontaneous brushstrokes” to capture the essence of the subject can be seen in most of his current pieces.
Dierdorf takes inspiration for his artwork from spending time in his garden and taking in the scenic landscape from his back porch. As a result, the primary theme of Dierdorf’s paintings involve landscapes, flowers, and gardens.
“My preferred medium is acrylics using bold colors, as well as blended subtle tones, to create an interesting expression for subjects that may include architectural elements, trees, and flowers” says Dierdorf.
During his years studying at the Ball State University School of Architecture, Dierdorf participated in design classes to study how to create buildings, functional interiors, and exterior spaces between and around buildings; how to be a curious observer of your surroundings; how light and shadow impart character; and how these environments will affect people. Dierdorf believes his studies at Ball State provided a great foundation for his artwork today.
Following graduation, Dierdorf put down the paintbrushes to focus on his professional career until 2009 when he decided to revisit creative painting.
“As a part-time endeavor, I began painting with acrylics on larger canvases, often creating hard edge images that were clearly influenced by Robert Indiana’s work,” says Dierdorf. “I also continued my photography of buildings, architectural details of buildings, flowers, and landscapes.”
Dierdorf’s paintings today are greatly influenced by painters like Monet, Miro, Kandinsky, and Pollock.
In addition to his involvement with Noblesville Creates, Dierdorf serves as an artist member of the Hamilton County Artists’ Association.
“The best memory from [my] early involvement with the NPA Board has been watching the organization figure out its mission and programs as NPA evolved to be the respected resource for artists to promote, exhibit, and sell their artwork,” Dierdorf says. “Engaging Noblesville and Fishers to the importance of art to enhance their communities has been wonderful to watch.”
Dierdorf’s full exhibit, Floral Celebration, can be seen at Meyer Najem, located at 11787 Lantern Road in Fishers on the 2nd floor, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You can meet Dierdorf at his free public reception on July 28 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Meyer Najem 2nd floor gallery.
