A Call to Artists – Request for Qualifications (RFQ) Techway Trailhead Art Sculpture

Project Overview

The Fishers Arts & Culture Commission (FACC) and Rebar Development (Rebar) seeks an artist, artist team, or creative company to design and install an art sculpture for the Techway Trailhead (8933 Technology Drive) along the Nickel Plate Trail in Fishers, Indiana. Artists are encouraged to maximize the use of color, texture, and lighting. This art sculpture will be required to use the Da Vinci Pursuit’s innovative Art Port.

The installation must be durable and projected to withstand weather conditions for up to ten (10) years with the ability to be part of a state-wide art sculpture exchange program through the Da Vinci Pursuit’s Art Port program. The site for this art sculpture has a strict footprint determined by the City and Rebar Development. The Art Port construction details will be provided in collaboration with the Da Vinci Pursuit and the City of Fishers.

Artist Eligibility

-18 years of age and live in the United States
-Have a demonstrated ability to design, fabricate, and install large-scale sculptural projects
-Carry personal liability insurance for the duration of the project ($1,000,000 per occurrence)
-Be willing to meet contractual obligations, adhere to the budget, and proposed timeline

Scope of Service

Design and install an Art Sculpture using The Da Vinci Pursuit Base, seen below (which has a 5” diameter and 1’ 2” depth) and:

-Encouraged themes include (but are not limited to) nature, abstract, recreation, technology, or innovation
-Variety in color and/or texture
-A lighting feature, either by solar or underground electrical (to be included in the port via conduit)
-Easily maintained / repaired and projected to withstand weather conditions for up to ten (10) years.
-Reasonably able to be relocated as part of The Da Vinci Pursuit state-wide art sculpture exchange program.

Timeline

RFQ Open: March 8, 2022 – May 6, 2022
Selection Process: May 6 – 27, 2022
Expected Artist Announcement: June 2022
Expected Install April 2023

Budget

The Budget is not to exceed $50,000.

Selection Process

The RFQ will be reviewed by the FACC’s Grant/RFQ Review Subcommittee. This subcommittee is made of local non-profit art organizations, Commissioners, and city staff. The subcommittee will review using the following selection criteria:

Selection Criteria

-The application is fully complete and organized.
-The artist / artist team / creative company demonstrates appropriate qualifications, experience, and technical abilities for the project.
-The concept demonstrates strong creative, innovation, and conceptual skills and artistic merit.
-The concept reflects / considers following community elements: family-oriented, playful, fresh, inclusion, authenticity, engagement, collaboration, innovation, educational (also think smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial)
-The concept positively enriches the integrity, diversity, and interest of the site. The concept style, media, and scale are appropriate to the site.
-The concept takes into consideration realistic maintenance procedures.

Images of Previous Work, no more than 10 images (via email, hard copy, or web link)
A description List that corresponds with the images of Previous Work

Post Selection

If selected the artist, artist team, or creative company will be working with the Fishers Arts & Culture Commission and directly with City of Fishers Staff and Rebar Development to bring the concept from description to reality. Staff will also coordinate with the City’s Community & Public Relations Department during install and prior to the unveiling. Staff will also coordinate with community partners Noblesville Creates and Fishers Arts Council on additional promotional opportunities for the artist, artist team, or creative company.
