Pedals of Community: The First Installation in Noblesville Creates’ Revolving Mural Program

If you’ve passed by the north side of the Judge Stone House in downtown Noblesville recently, you may have noticed a bold red peony blossoming across the bricks. The mural, titled Pedals of Community, is more than just a beautiful addition to the city, it’s the very first installation in Noblesville Creates’ Revolving Mural Program, a new initiative designed to bring fresh, rotating public art to downtown.

At the heart of the mural is Derien Cole, an illustrator, muralist, screen printer, and designer who’s been building his creative practice for more than 16 years. Known for his hand-painted murals and textile screen printing, Derien’s work blends personal expression with community impact.

“I use my creativity as a personal outlet,” Derien shares. “Over time, it’s become a skill I use to help others achieve their artistic goals—either for their business or personal spaces.”

Derien first connected with Noblesville Creates through a local event years ago and was honored to be invited to help launch the Revolving Mural Program. His mural was installed just in time for the Indiana Peony Festival, a local celebration that’s grown to become a source of community pride.

Peonies are more than a pretty flower in Indiana, they carry cultural and emotional meaning, especially in Noblesville. “The red peony represents passion, honor, and wealth—things I believe most Americans strive for,” Derien explains. “I included five feathers and five sparrow silhouettes to represent the fifth year of the festival. Sparrows are symbolic of navigating challenges and adapting to change. That’s something we can all relate to.”

Unlike his previous hand-painted murals, Pedals of Community was Derien’s first vinyl installation, a new medium for him. “It was the easiest mural I’ve ever done,” he says. “All I did was pick up an Apple Pencil. It was exciting to learn a new process.”

The Revolving Mural Program was created to bring dynamic, temporary public art to Noblesville. The initiative provides a platform for artists to showcase their work while adding visual interest and energy to the cityscape. As each mural rotates out, a new one will take its place, keeping the community experience fresh and vibrant.

Derien is proud to be the first artist featured. “It was an honor,” he says.

Programs like this don’t just beautify the city, they build its spirit. “I believe this is important for the community’s morale,” Derien says. “It gives people something joyful to see on their commute or when they’re just passing through. The community wins.”

But to keep this momentum going, Noblesville Creates needs community support. The Revolving Mural Program is funded through generous donations, and every dollar helps bring a new wave of creativity to the streets of Noblesville.

If you believe in the power of art to uplift, inspire, and connect, please consider donating to support the Revolving Mural Program. Your gift helps make sure that more murals come to life with color, meaning, and stories, just like Pedals of Community.

As Derien puts it: “Life is a gift. Everyone is a stranger until you introduce yourself. We’re all in this together. Each one teach one.”
